About the sitter
Ethel Jones originally studied at Somerville from 1900 to 1903. She later held the Mary Somerville Research Fellowship.

About the artist
Painter and teacher. Educated at Dulwich College, he won a scholarship to read history at Oxford – although he then read English. He became a schoolmaster in Oxford but continued to paint, including portraits of Sir Isaiah Berlin, Dr F R Leavis and Lord Hailsham.
Greenham and his wife lived at Otmoor, Oxfordshire.
