Black History Month

The JCR Ethnic Minorities Officers Rohan and Hannah have collated a display of books in honour of Black History Month, and this is now on display in the library loggia.

Each of these books explores themes which relate to Black and BAME experiences, history and identity, for example Thiong’o and Achebe’s examinations of the effects and remnants of British colonialism in Africa, Shukla’s analysis of the experiences of BAME people in modern Britain, and Angelou’s autobiographical accounts of struggles with racism in the Southern United States.

The books on display are:

Devil on the Cross – Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o

Things Fall Apart – Chinua Achebe

The Good Immigrant – Nikesh Shukla

The hate u give – Angie Thomas

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings – Maya Angelou

Their Eyes Were Watching God – Zora Neale Hurston

The Bluest Eye – Toni Morrison

For more reading, try searching SOLO, or browsing the relevant sections of the library (modern literature in English is 827-829, race relations is 305, or the relevant section in history, broken down by country), or the excellent, lengthy and detailed ORLO list (you may have to login with your SSO to access this), curated by Bodleian librarians (you can also make suggestions for books to be added to this – the main page is here: https://libguides.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/changingthenarrative)
